Back StoryAbout 8 years ago I decided to try painting an icon as a gift for my husband who was at that time really growing in his faith. I had had an idea that since Jesus got 100% of his DNA from his Mother (unless God worked a little creative ingenuity which is entirely possible) He must have looked very much like Mary. So I wanted to do an icon that reflected that.
I had never done an icon before, and so, when hubby discovered what I was attempting, he bought me a book on iconography. Well, since then we've had two more children and I have not had the time to finish the icon. Even more to the point, I had drawn the composition and was afraid to "ruin" it with paint. (I am better at drawing than painting.) So, the other day, my daughter brought home these cute little canvases for a family painting activity, and it dawned on me that I could practice painting my icon on these little canvases before I attempted painting my husband's. I liked the result so much, that I wondered if this would be a possible income to supplement my husband's until he finds a new job. So, I posted my little experiment to Facebook and here we are! Perhaps I should have trusted God's prompting eight years ago... but I'm a little slow! ~ Susan Howard |
